Future of OTA CBC TV in Saint John, NB unclear

Dear Minister Moore,

A colleague recently brought my attention to an over-the-air television matter brewing in New Brunswick.

CBC-TV has proposed to the CRTC that rather than upgrading its Mount Champlain, NB television transmitter (currently serving Fredericton and Saint John) to digital, that they instead install their new CBAT-TV digital transmitter in Fredericton.

According to the CRTC this move, “would therefore result in a loss of over-the-air television service to the residents of Saint John”.

Furthermore, the CRTC notes that, “this application would decrease the potential viewership in the regional service area by 62.5%, (from 303,465 to 113,930).”

The CRTC is inviting the public to intervene on this proposal forwarded by the CBC.
