Dear Minister Moore,
The CRTC announced yesterday that CBC has to go back to the digital transmission drawing board with respect to its television transmitter plans for CBAT-TV in Saint John, NB.
The Commission denied CBC’s plan to erect its new digital television transmitter in Fredericton, NB since it would have resulted in a loss of CBC-TV signal coverage in Saint John.
While CBC noted that “OTA transmission is no longer the most appropriate and efficient means of making its television services available throughout Canada”, the CRTC still rejected the plan, noting that it encourages “broadcasters to provide digital coverage that matches their current analog coverage”.
The CRTC’s decision was also informed by the “numerous” interventions filed by the public.
It’s unclear what CBC’s Plan B is for CBAT.
p.s. Thanks to Greg O’Brien for the scoop.
