Dear Minister Moore,
Seeing that 10 days have passed since Canadian broadcasters were to have started airing digital television PSAs (for really, really this time), I thought I would list the ones I’ve spotted.
Sadly/strangely, very few of the PSAs that I’ve seen on TV are also available online. It’s good they’re on TV, but why not also put them online? CBC, CTV (Bell) and Global (Shaw) don’t have their DTV PSAs posted on their DTV transition sites. Why not? They should.
I wonder if CBC is airing special PSAs in London and Saskatoon to advise OTA viewers that they will have zero OTA signals after August 31.
Rogers’ PSAs for CityTV and OMNI are online which is good, but they’re encoded in Flash so they can’t be embedded into other sites, like this one. Also, I don’t know if Two and a Half Men was the best choice of program to feature in the OMNI PSA. At least CityTV featured Breakfast Television in their DTV PSA. Perhaps OMNI could have featured a clip from Metropia? Maybe not.
The Bell PSA airing on CTV really gets my goat. They list “Subscribe to Digital Television” as the first solution to those who will lose analog OTA TV. Provided DTV signals reach the home of OTA CTV viewers, there is no need to “subscribe” to anything. It’s free over-the-air! The fact that Bell’s DTV site is filed under “shopping” tells it all. Curious also that Bell directs OTA TV viewers to The Source to buy their DTV converter box. Wonder how much that deal was worth.
All the DTV PSAs are pretty bad, as expected, but NTV’s takes the cake (see above). At least it’s informative, I guess. It’s also kinda old school Canadiana. Actually, I change my mind. NTV’s is my favourite DTV PSA.
Here’s my list so far. I’ve yet to see any DTV PSAs on TVO or Sun News Network. If you’ve seen any others let me know! (Update: @mvormittag in London reported seeing a TVO DTV PSA on May 10, 2011).
